I am a church deacon at Potter Street Baptist Church, a Justice of the Peace sitting in North East Hertfordshire and currently studying Health and Social Care with the Open University.  My two children both attended the primary school in Little Hallingbury where we have lived for over twenty years.  My son has high functioning Autism so continued his education at a specialist school, my daughter went onto Bishops Stortford College then Norwich University of Art.  I strongly believe that all children are entitled to an education that suits their individual needs, that they should be encouraged and nurtured in a safe environment which is also fun. This is my first school governor’s post.

School Governors are the strategic leaders of our school and have a vital role to play in providing the best possible education for our pupils. By law the purpose of maintained school governing bodies is to ‘conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school’.

Their three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Governors are linked to a super committee which meet at least termly and include the following areas -

  • Personnel
  • Curriculum
  • Finance
  • Premises

The minutes of the Governors’ meetings are available in the school office for viewing.
