St James Church

High Wych Primary school is a Voluntary Controlled Church of England school. We have strong links with St James Church, where our school community worship several times a year. We hold our Harvest Service, Christmas Service and Easter Service in the church, as well as additional class visits, usually linked to our RE Curriculum and an end of Year service for Year 6 pupils.

We are privileged to have Reverend Alison visit each week to lead our Collective Worship. Reverend Alison is additionally involved in many of our school activities and events. Our school is in the Diocese of St Albans and we have an active association with the Diocesan Board of Education

Easter Service at St James Church

We celebrated our Easter service at St James Church. The whole school community, from Nursery through to Year 6, took part in our Easter Service which was attended by our parents. Our children (with Reverend Alison) lead the service with songs, readings, prayers and an ensemble by our school choir. See Galleries for more photos.

Rivers Nursery Art Competition

Rivers Nursey Art Competition, represented by Foundation Stage and Yr6.

The large apple is from Nursery, they looked at the apple tree in our school ground and printed with the apples they found.  The Apple tree is from Reception class, they also looked at the apple tree, mixed colours to make the apples and printed the leaves with their hands.

We feel very fortunate at High Wych School to have evidence in our old log books that Thomas Rivers visited the children.  In our school grounds, we have a selection of River's fruit tress, including the conference pear, which Yr6 used as their inspiration.  The children developed their water colour skills, each producing a conference pear.  They used their art work, and a digital image of Thomas Rivers, to produce a mixed media creation, incorporating the old and the new.

Harvest Festival

Pupils enjoy growing a variety of vegetables in the school allotment each year.  We donate a selection to a local charity (including fruit grown on our school trees) where staff provide nutritional home cooked meals for their club members.  The non-perishable items brought in by the classes are given to food banks and the sunflower heads are harvested to make bird food.

Remembrance Day

Yr2 created a poppy wreath made from thank you notes.  The children visited the church where they learnt about the local soldiers.  We met the vicar and our local historian in the churchyard for a short service and placed the poppy wreath under the memorial cross.

House of Opportunity Christmas Box Appeal

Everyone loves to receive a present at Christmas.  For many vulnerable children and families in Southeast Europe the season serves as a reminder of their isolation and poverty.
Children and staff helped to spread joy to thousands of children and adults by filling a shoeboxes with a variety of gifts ranging from toiletries, clothes, stationery, toys and treats.

Hertfordshire Independent Living Service - Christmas Card Project.

Children in school made an extra special Christmas card this year, they took part in the annual HILS project. The children learnt about the importance of remembering those that may not have family around them and designed beautiful, festive cards to give to an elderly member of the community who might be spending Christmas alone.
